Leonardo Bigazzi

Filmexplorer took advantage of the film curator Leonardo Bigazzi’s presence in Nyon in the Jury of the section “Burning Lights” at Visions du Réel 2023 in order to discuss with him several topics that equally mark Filmexplorer’s profile, from the art-cinema interface to the notion of expanded cinema, and the tasks of festivals today.

Curator among several institutions, at the Fondazione InBetween Art Film and at Lo schermo dell’arte, Florence-based Leonardo Bigazzi has sharpened his eye between the cinema and art world. The distinction between two different systems of production and at the same time the need for continuity in aesthetic discourse make of the art-cinema interface an important topic of exchange. Starting from here, we asked Leonardo Bigazzi about

  • how he interprets his role of film curator;
  • the situation of criticism in our society;
  • the challenges and the opportunities of the digital turn;
  • the notion of “expanded cinema”;
  • the main tasks of film festivals today.

With Filmexplorer he shares the conviction that, also due to the proliferation of references and the dispersive consequences of hyper-production, a discursive exchange – of which this podcast is an example – becomes a fundamental necessity in order to shape a new common ground for cultural reception.
