I have thought of this video essay almost every day since I first saw it, several years ago. It engages with a memory of a film, more so than with the film itself. Lying down in his bed, his room crowded with several of his brothers, Seumboy Vrainom :€'s character is reminded of a movie scene in which a character lies down in his own bunk bed. The character is young and Black, and so is he.
Taking a controversial political thriller about Islamic terrorism as its starting point (Made in France by Nicolas Boukhrief, 2015), the video unfolds as a surprisingly quiet, almost ASMR-like exploration of issues of private space and intimacy. The violence that is inflicted on the narrator's body is silent: oppression is enforced by the bed's bar, the unescapable presence of his siblings, the impossibility to be without being seen or heard. The essay rambles, as a sleepless mind would.
The video depicts with great precision how the narrator's insomnia should be understood as a symptom of his specific socio-economic situation, itself widely informed by systemic racism, but every insomniac has their own reasons for not finding comfort in « the lying position », and I can't but find resonance between what this video says about race and what others could say about gender. That I should remember this video essay almost every time I flip over in my bed, struggling with my own restless mind, shows how suggestive it is in its investigation of spectatorial identification and embodiment, and its critique of the relation between privacy, sleeplessness and oppression.

La position couchée
Comment avoir du confort dans cet espace.
Je repense au film “...” qu'on a regardé chez Gauvain.
Un film sur le basculement de 4 jeunes dans le terrorisme islamique.
Il devait sortir juste avant Charlie Hebdo.
Il a été déprogrammé.
On l'a regardé un an après.
Un film immonde.
Un bon thriller policier,
sur ce point rien à dire.
Mais qui ne comprend pas le sujet qu'il aborde.
Dans ce film il y a un garçon noir, le plus noir du crew.
Très jeune et assez influençable, un bon gars.
A un moment il rentre dans sa chambre,
avec son frère dans le lit superposé.
Il est dans la position couchée.
La position couché c'est terrible
Surtout quand tu as un mauvais lit
Surtout quand tu ne peux pas changer de lit
Pour des questions d'espaces, de temps et de thunes;
Des positions couchées il y en a 4,
Pour chacun des côtés
Mais une fois qu'elles sont toutes utilisées, elles se transforment en torture.
La position couchée fait fonctionner la tête.
Les yeux et les oreilles.
Elle est circonscrite à l'espace du lit pour ne pas empiéter sur la zone de confort de tes frères.
La position couché c'est celle que tu va prendre quand tu veux avoir un peu de tranquillité, seul, en étant capable de contrôler qui peut voir ce que tu vois sur l'écran de ton smartphone.
Dans cette position tu vas lire, jouer ou regarder une vidéo, traîner sur FB ou écouter de la musique.
Si tu pètes quelqu’un l'entendra, si tu pleures, quelqu’un le verras,
Et tu n'as pas forcément envie de tout expliquer.
Dans mon salon il y a deux grands canapés.
Ils peuvent accueillir 2 personnes qui ne se touchent pas et 3 qui se touchent.
Ils sont pratiques si tu n'as rien à cacher.
Si tu es prêt à être distrait.
Sinon, il vaut mieux reprendre la position couchée.
Seulement elle fait mal au dos à force.
Je ne peux pas m'asseoir le dos droit dans mon lit de rez-de-chaussée.
Ma tête heurterait celui du haut.
En plus je n'ai pas de dossier.
En haut la discrétion oblige à rester immobile car les fines planches de bois craquent à travers le matelas.
Une petite cage d'intimité.
Où il faut apprendre à vivre avec les autres.
J'écoutais une interview de Jean Marc Rouillan après sa sortie de prison.
Il dit qu'il faut écrire à partir de ce qu'on connaît.
Il a raison.
Maintenant la question c'est comment publier?
Pour qui et pour quoi écrire?
Je vais entrer à SciencesPo en septembre.
Je vais changer c'est sur.
J'ai 0 argent et l’année coûte 14000 euros.
Je n'ai pas obtenu de bourse.
Pendant ce temps je me radicalise.
Dans la tête.
Il est 14h41 à Shanghai et 08h41 à Paris.
Posé sur le balcon avec ma tablette entre les mains.
J'écris en regardant Paris depuis le 13ème étage.
On m'a promis la canicule alors qu'il fait froid et qu'il pleut.
L'humidité cache la tour Eiffel et c'est tant mieux.

The lying position
How to have comfort in this space ?
I remember the lm “Made in France” that we watched at Gauvain’s place.
A film about the fall of 4 young people into Islamic terrorism.
It had to go out just before the Charlie Hebdo attack.
It has been canceled.
We watched it a year later.
A poor movie.
A good police thriller,
nothing to say on this point,
but that does not understand the subject it is tackling.
In this lm there is a black boy, the darkest of the crew.
Very young and easily in uenced, a good guy.
There’s a scene where he comes back to his room,
with his brother in the bunk bed they share.
He is in a lying position.
The lying position is terrible
Especially when your bed is not good
Especially when you can’t change it
Because of space, time and money.
There are 4 lying positions,
1 For each side
But once you tried them all, they turn into torture.
The lying position affects the head, eyes and ears.
It is limited to the space of the bed in order to not go over your brother’s comfort zone.
The lying position is the one you will take when you want a little peace, alone, being able to control who can see what you see on your smartphone screen.
In this position you will read, play or watch a video, hang out on FB or listen to music.
If you fart someone will hear it, if you cry, someone will see it,
And you don’t necessarily want to explain everything.
In my living room there are two large sofas.
They can each host 2 ppl without having to touch each
other or 3 people that would touch each other
They are handy if you have nothing to hide.
If you are ready to be distracted.
Otherwise, it is better to choose the lying position.
But it hurts my back.
I can’t sit straight in the bottom bed of my bunk bed.
My head would hit the top one.
Besides, I don’t have anything lean back on.
On the top bed discretion forces you to stay still because the thin wooden planks crack across the mattress.
A small privacy cage.
Where you have to learn to live with others.
I was listening to an interview with Jean Marc Rouillan after he got out of prison.
He says you have to write from what you know.
He is right.
Now the question is how to publish?
For whom and for what to write?
I will be joining SciencesPo in September.
I’m going to change, that’s for sure.
I have 0 money and the year costs 14,000 euros.
I did not get a scholarship.
During that time my mind radicalize.

I write while looking at Paris from the 13th oor.
