Nana - Before, Now and Then

Kamila Andini continues her exploration of female emancipation in the strongly patriarchal Indonesia. The theme is immediately made explicit, which wouldn’t have been helpful to the long development of the plot, if she had not focused on a nuanced feminist protagonist. However, the film almost exclusively serves the slow-paced storytelling and its “message”, leaving little room for cinematic ideas – in comparison, for example, to Andini’s wonderful Seen und Unseen (2017).
